Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D is a vital nutrient, necessary for good health.  Yet the majority of people are vitamin D deficient.

As study after study shows the fundamental role vitamin D plays in disease and health, vitamin D deficiency — which often develops insidiously in childhood — should be on every parent’s and pediatrician’s radar, say physicians from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

Prolonged and untreated vitamin D deficiency can affect multiple organs and functions, including bone growth and density, metabolism, heart and immunity, but it rarely causes overt symptoms and often goes unnoticed.

A Review on Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment in Pediatric Patients. J Lee et al. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3979050/

Vitamin D insufficiency is a common problem in pediatrics, especially those who have chronic illness, and who are malnourished, limited geographically to the amount of sun exposure, as well as those with darker skin, and on chronic medications.

Vitamin D status in autism spectrum disorders and the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in autistic children. K Saad et al. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25876214

Fifty-seven percent of the patients in the present study had vitamin D deficiency, and 30% had vitamin D insufficiency.

Eighty-three subjects completed 3 months of daily vitamin D treatment. Collectively, 80.72% (67/83) of subjects who received vitamin D3 treatment had significantly improved outcome, which was mainly in the sections of the CARS and aberrant behavior checklist subscales that measure behavior, stereotypy, eye contact, and attention span.

Vitamin D is inexpensive, readily available and safe. It may have beneficial effects in ASD subjects, especially when the final serum level is more than 40 ng/ml.

This study evidenced a significantly low level of serum vitamin D in children with ADHD. This suggests the need for regularly monitoring of serum vitamin D levels and treatment of patients with vitamin D deficiencies.
